The Okotoks Oilers U17AAA and U18AAA Daytime hockey schedule has many advantages that the entire association benefits from due to the extreme ice allocation challenges we face in our growing community.
Historically, we have had AAA players that have either not made school their top priority, or have struggled academically, and could have greatly benefitted from academic support during and after the season ends. The OOAA wants our players to achieve their best as student athletes, as education is one of our four pillars.
With all of this in mind, our executive mirrored what is currently being offered in the WHL by several teams.
Rationale:
As many male AAA players attend Jr. Camps, they miss out on the first three weeks of school. They often start the school year behind the class, and have to strive to catch up. This is also the case for students who are out of our school catchment area and have to transfer schools once they have earned a spot on the roster.
At the U18AAA level, it is common that some players miss up to a week of school at a time, as they are called up to play at the Jr A/WHL level.
Testamonials:
“Our family found the academic support amazing… Especially because our kid was one that used it to its full potential. We think it’s worthwhile and well done on the association's part.”

The academic support sessions, provided to the players, was a unique and valuable tool. The teachers covered all subject areas, gave players individual support, and helped to fill gaps when players missed time away from the classroom. The sessions were held by teachers, who also played high levels of hockey and could relate to the players. Aside from academic help they held the players accountable for their grades, helped them set goals, provided hockey feedback and developed both short and long term plans with the players. This valuable component to the program offered players a connection between hockey and academics.
