November 4 - Maltreatment Awareness Day - holds special meaning as it aligns with Rule 11.4 in the Hockey Canada rulebook, which addresses on-ice discrimination.
Rule 11.4 is a key component of creating an inclusive hockey environment, applying to all coaches, players, and officials.
This rule states: Any player or team official who engages in taunts, insults, or intimidation based on discriminatory grounds will be assessed a Gross Misconduct penalty. By enforcing Rule 11.4, Hockey Alberta aims to prevent discrimination and ensure respect, fairness, and safety for all involved in the game. It’s a vital step in making hockey a place where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to play.
If you are a player/ athlete, parent or family of an athlete, coach or team personnel, official, or MHA member, Hockey Alberta’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee has compiled a list of reminders and strategies that you can do to help move us forward in our steps to enhance the safety and inclusiveness of our spaces.
